The only semi-affordable full frame sensor DSLR around and the price is dropping like a rock. Low-light results are pretty spectacular which is important because you'll be shooting mostly indoors for your kid's first year of life.

My standard, every day zoom. It's large and heavy but the results speak for themselves. Large aperture required because again, you'll be shooting a lot indoors. If you prefer shooting wider, substitute the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L for this.

Canon's sharpest zoom created to date, this longer zoom shines like no other outdoors. If you need this range indoors, go for the f/2.8 IS, otherwise stick with this f/4 one as it's much smaller and lighter than its f/2.8 sibling.

The ultimate indoor lens to grab photos of your kid scampering around. It's not a zoom but it allows you to capture movement in far less light than the f/2.8 zoom. Wonderfully sharp to boot.

The ultimate indoor portrait lens and arguably Canon's flagship prime that's less than 200mm. Sharp wide open at f/1.2 and only gets better from there. Tough to use with kids though as its slower focus usually can't keep up with kids who have just learned to crawl/walk but I keep it around for adults. Staring down the business end of this lens can be intimidating though.

If you want to forgo primes and stick with zooms, then you'll definitely need a flash for indoor use. Learn how to use bounce flash and/or get a diffuser for better results.

Useful to control off-camera flash or just to have better low-light focusing accuracy.

When out and about I usually carry 2 lenses with the camera. This bag carries such a set up perfectly and it's quite fashionable to boot. For more space, look at the 6 Million or 7 Million Dollar Home bags.
